This kind of popped into my head in the middle of the night (like so many things often do). It kept popping up and getting more evolved each time, so I knew that was the right idea. Once I knew it was going to be a horse, I definitely wanted to stay away from obvious associations like Fire or Wind. I decided on the element of Earth because it is both a very grounding/centering element, but also can be a very powerful one.
I didn't choose "pretty" flowers to put in her mane; dandelions are wild, and I figured that'd be a more likely flower for an elemental spirit. I wanted her to be made up of living things; Her body is made from the very ground that she is leaping from, there's a birch sapling making up her horn, her mane from grasses and ivy vines, and her hooves of granite. I didn't add a lot of highlights to her body because soil tends to suck up light, especially that nice, rich, dark stuff.
This kept me busy while I was waiting for my new pencils to come from Blick so I could finish my commissions. Speaking of which......*pads off to work on one*
I just looked through the other contest entries and I have to say yours is one of the best! I saw a lot of fire and water entries, so nice choice going with something different!
I love how she's looking right at the viewer, it gives off a strong feeling of power. I love it. ^.^

Aw, thanks! I've been at this for the past three days whenever I had a few spare minutes. This was that idea that just up and demanded to be let out of my head.

Please boycott the horse racing industry. In the UK, 375 horses are raced to death each year by falling and breaking bones to collapsing from heart attacks after races. Statistics compiled by registered animal welfare charity, Animal Aid.
There's like a year's subscription and a few other things up for grabs, so I thought "why not?" Even if not, it was fun to do. Oh, and on a different subject altogether, I found the perfect plum color for Tucker's tail, by the way.

Yay! I hope it wasn't too hard for you to try and match up the colours. Honestly though, don't worry if they are not a perfect match, he's an awkward colour and I know how hard it is to match
I might have a shot at the elements competition myself, I have zero chance of winning but at least the drawing part will be fun lol I had a look at some of the other entries and yours is definately one of the best. I'll be really surprised if you don't at least get placed!

I have something as close as I could find; it's this brownish red, but it's not a real bright chestnut. Everything else I have is too brown.
Go ahead and enter that elements contest. Why not? At least you'll have fun with it! I had a lot of fun making that horse I did. I'd like to see what you come up with!
